A Favorite Family Treat – Homemade Ice Cream
What could be better than ice cream on a hot day. Nearly everyone loves this frozen treat and it is so versatile. It comes is many flavors and can be added to so many other desserts that it never gets boring. Apple pie a la mode anyone? And, people eat it all year ‘round. It makes a great dessert for dinner guests, birthday and holiday parties.
You can purchase a variety of ice creams, sorbets and frozen yogurts in your local supermarket or even at your local specialty shop. But, what about making it at home? It’s a fun and fairly easy family project that’s great for kids and they will love the results. And, you can be really creative in making your frozen treats – producing copies of flavors that you find in your local supermarket or inventing brand new ones. Let your imagination be your guide and add chocolate sprinkles, nuts, coconut flakes and more.
The starting point for making your own homemade ice cream is rock salt. The salt helps to freeze it and keeps it creamy. Next you need an ice cream maker which you can find in the hand-crank style or the electric version. Both work very well but for obvious reasons, the electric version is much easier on the arms. Then you will of course need to add milk or cream, sugar and flavorings to the rock salt. In fact, you can even make ice cream in a plastic bag - a method that is great fun for kids but which can get a little messy. Either way, you’ll be making a frozen dessert that you know contains all natural ingredients and beats the taste of even the best commercial versions.
If you like vanilla ice cream, you’ll love it even more if you make it yourself. Many commercial vendors use cheaper ingredients and so if you choose high quality ingredients such as real vanilla beans, you’ll be in heaven as soon as you take your first lick.
But, remember to incorporate additional activity into your day or week if you are planning on making your own ice cream at home. If you make it right, it will taste so good that you may find that you’re eating it more often than is wise for your waistline.

Old Fashion Sour Cream Sugar Cookies and Nina's Sugar Cookies
What can be more fun than baking delicious cookies? Eating them, I suppose. Here are some recipes from my vintage recipe collection for easy and delicious sugar cookies. These are perfect for holidays, birthdays, rainy days, or just spending time baking with the kids, other family or friends. So get out those cookie sheets and get them filled some delicious cookie dough. Just imagine the aroma in your kitchen...oh, yummy!
1 cup margarine
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
4 cups flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Mix margarine, oil, sugars, and eggs together in a large mixing bowl. Sift flour, cream of tartar and baking soda together. Add to the egg mixture and mix well. Mix in the vanilla. This dough will be very sticky. Divide into 3 equal parts and make into rolls. Put into freezer and allow to freeze. Remove from freezer and slice into 1/4-inch thick slices. Sprinkle with colored sugars, if desired. Bake on a ungreased cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
1 cup shortening
3 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp soda
5 1/2 to 6 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream shortening. Add sugar and continue creaming until light. Add eggs and sour cream and beat. Sift the dry ingredients together and add to the shortening-sugar-egg-cream mixture. Form dough into walnut sized balls and roll in granulated sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet and flatten with the bottom of a glass. Bake in 350 degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
NOTE: For holidays, use tiny drops of liquid food coloring in the sugar before rolling the dough balls in it. Red and green coloring is perfect for Christmas, orange for Halloween, orange and brown for Thanksgiving, pastels for Easter, red for Valentine's Day, etc.
Enjoy!

Can anyone tell me where strawberries w/sour cream and brown sugar originated?
When I was little I always used to eat my strawberries dipped in sour cream and then brown sugar. Tonight I introduced my boyfriend to this recipe.... I was surprised he had never heard of it nor had he tried it (he thought I was crazy at first) Can anyone tell me where this recipe originated from? The history behind it? It doesn't seem like something one would just randomly come up with. Thanks for any info you can provide!
Ive never heard of it before. but thanks for sharing it with me.I will try it.
