good gift idea for a french host family?
I am going abroad to France for three weeks and staying with a host family. I would like to bring something nice but I dont know anything about my family (how many people, kids, etc). I was reading some suggestions to other people elsewhere, but most people said to bring local stuff or pictures of my town, but i live in the middle of no where new jersey and there is nothing unique or special about it. So far I was thinking things like lenox, waterford crystal or godiva. Any other suggestions?
If you can afford it, some kind of portable mp3 player is good like a cheap ipod.
Cookbooks could be tricky since (1) it's in English, which they may not speak, and (2) their food is better than ours. But overall it's an excellent idea, especially if you can find something regional (like new england clam chowder). Food is a really big deal in France.
Better yet, there are many wineries owned by French people/companies in the US, so if you do the research, it's certainly a hit. For example, I brought my host family two excellent bottles wine; one was Domaine Drouhin (an Oregon Pinot Noir, $40 at the time). Joseph Drouhin is a highly respected winemaker in Burgandy and I presume they own the property in Oregon.
If you can't find something like that, a very nice bottle of California white wine is recognized as decent all around the world. Admit it's inferior to what you can get in France but say you hope they enjoy it as new world wines are cured differently so they do taste different.
