The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory?

I’ll admit this book is good reading however the more I read the more it bothers me the liberties with history it takes. Yes, I do know it is “historical fiction” but many would read this book and take much of what is in it as fact. Some facts are true but many are not. Philippa Gregory writes Mary Boleyn, “The Other Boleyn Girl”, was the younger sister and paints her as wholesome and innocent. Many scholars believe she was in fact the oldest and she was mistress to the King of France before she married William Carey and became the mistress of Henry VIII. Additionally the author puts forth George Boleyn was gay when quite the opposite was true and she strongly eludes to Ann and George having an incestuous relationship. Most historians will agree is not true.

What do you think of “historical fiction” and do you know of any additional historical errors put forth by Philippa Gregory in The Other Boleyn Girl?

I am personally a fan of historical fiction. I've enjoyed several of Gregory's novels and some of my other favorite authors include Karen Harper and Anya Seton.

In addition to the historically questionable motifs you pointed out, there a few more I am familiar with. Keeping in mind that, since little is actually KNOWN about Mary, the best we have about her are scholarly theories (and those can often conflict). First, some scholars don't think Henry Carey was fathered by King Henry. Also, it is generally believed that Mary's parents were actually horrified by her sexual promiscuity - and Mary was generally considered to be somewhat of a slut, not the shy young thing she was portrayed as in the book. Although dates are somewhat sketchy, Mary was probably about seven or eight years older than she was in the book when the events described actually took place. Additionally, when Anne made Mary's son her ward, it was actually a kindness and way to supply him with an education, not the mean-spirited act it was in the book. As to Anne & George having an incestuous relationship - In Gregory's The Boleyn Inheritance, they admit that the evidence against Anne & George was made up. It may interest you to know that one of the biographers that Gregory cites as a reference source later somewhat condemned Gregory's "use" of information.

If you'd like to read a somwhat more accurate telling of Mary's story, I recommend The Last Boleyn, by Karen Harper - still not historically perfect, but they get a few more things correct.
