House extension - can RSJ go from one side to the other or will it need to rest on pillars?
I'm considering an extension across the back of my house. At the moment I've got two rooms (one each side) with a porch area in the middle that is neither use nor ornament. If I extend right across I can have a nice spacious L shaped kitchen/family room. I'm just wondering about the back of the house. I know we'll need an RSJ to support the wall that's knocked out (and there are 2 floors above so it'll be a lot to support) and will use a proper structural engineer when the time comes for calculations. However, I'm still at the stage where I'm making my mind up what I want. The back of the house measures about 10 metres across. Will the RSJ just sit on nibs one each side or are we likely to need central pillars for support? I need to know so I can get my head round which side is best for kitchen, where there'd be enough room for table, etc.
Thank you!
(NB house is brick built around 1910-15 if that's relevant)
We have a RSJ spanning a 5 metre gap above our patio doors - and it is quite large . So to span a 10 metre gap will need a substantial RSJ. The side walls supporting it must be big enough to have a good 20 cm of the RSJ on it.
